When skin burns on the outside, it becomes damaged on the inside. The more skin is exposed to UV rays, the less protection DNA has, which leads to damage. Probiotics may have yet another benefit – guarding your skin against the damaging effects of sun. Here is what the editors of NewBeauty has to say about the topical benefits of probiotics.

As much as I love the cold weather, the moment it starts to get cold my face protests and becomes dry and easily chapped. It’s always been hard to get through the holidays and maintain a can-do-attitude and enjoy all the many things the holidays have to offer with a sore chapped face. It might sound a little silly, but day after day of being chappy and trying to cook, clean and decorate (not to mention how painful it was to have the heat from the stove meander to my face or the hot steamy shower) it got to be a little too much, so mid holiday season I often found myself throwing in the festivity towel…and this is the very best time of year so it was very upsetting and disappointing. This year has been different, I’ve been doing the Tula For Life 30 Day Challenge – Tula is a probiotic skincare line consisting of a Hydrating Day and Night Cream, Revitalizing Eye Cream,Illuminating Face Serum and Clarifying Face Cleanser.
I come from a very long line of dry skinned individuals, we’ve been telling each other our tales of woe for as long as I can remember – but this year I can tell my tale of abandoning the dry skin ship. I have been using the entire Tula line and even with this nice and nippy cold snap that we’ve had, I haven’t had any chapped areas on my face. When I wash my face with the Tula Clarifying Face Cleanser, it doesn’t irritate my skin, it doesn’t make me cringe in pain – not even a little. My face feels clean and fresh, ready to take on the day. Whether in the morning or at night the Hydrating Day […]
After all those years of health class, it should come as no surprise to anyone to hear that skin is the body’s largest organ. In that same vein (yep, pun intended), foods that help to keep your body feeling great on the inside will also contribute to helping you look your best on the outside. Add these healthy, delicious foods to your everyday diet, and you’ll be well on your way to looking and feeling amazing, perfect skin included.
Water
You’ve heard it before, but we’ll tell you again: Fruits and vegetables both tend to be high in water content, but it’s always helpful to simply drink more water, particularly with lemon, says Marie Delcioppo, owner of Lush Vitality. Water keeps the skin well-hydrated and “dewy,” and adding lemon to water boosts detoxification and antioxidant intake.
Green Tea
There have been a number of encouraging studies showing the skin benefits of green tea, says Dr. David Bank, dermatologist and Founder & Director of The Center For Dermatology, Cosmetic & Laser Surgery. “Animal studies showed protection from skin cancer [as a result of green tea consumption]. Both animal and human studies have credibly demonstrated that topical green tea formulations reduce sun damage.” He adds, “Green tea appears to exert sun damage protection by quenching free radicals and reducing inflammation rather than by blocking UV rays. Therefore, green tea may synergistically enhance sun protection when used in addition to a sunscreen.”
Coconut Oil
As an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial ingredient, coconut oil will help clear up skin flare-ups, moisturize, and boost antioxidant activity, which slows down the aging process, says Delcioppo.
Pomegranates
To boost the efficacy of your favorite sunscreen, arm yourself with fruits that contain nutrients that can protect from the inside out, says celebrity […]
Revealing Younger Looking Skin with #TulaForLife Challenge
Do you ever look at a child and marvel at their beautiful skin? I often marvel at the softness of my daughters sweet cheeks. Ah, to have that soft and smooth skin back. Wouldn’t that be nice? I must admit that I sometimes neglect my skin. Some nights I’m so tired that I even go to bed with my makeup on. YIKES!
The folks at Tula asked me to take their #TulaForLife 30 Day Challenge. I was excited to take this challenge and really concentrate on ME for a change. I needed a good kick in the pants to make sure I complete a full skin care regimen both morning and night. Here I am on day #1 of the challenge.
The Tula product line is named for the sanskrit word for “balance.” It is one of the first skin care products to use probiotics as their main ingredients. According to Tula:
Tula Probiotic Technology was created using some of the most nutritious ingredients in order to refresh, protect, revitalize, diminish and prevent the signs of aging so that we can maintain a youthful complexion and a healthy skin tone for as long as possible.
These ingredients help protect the skin against negative environmental influences. The Probiotic Technology promotes a natural balance, externally supplying nutritive elements to the skin and thereby helping to stabilize the skin’s immune system.
I have had good results taking probiotics for my general health and immunity, so I was very curious to see how it would work on my skin. I was given the following products for this review:
Purifying Face Cleanser
Illuminating Face Serum
Revitalizing Eye Cream
Hydrating Day and Night Cream
I have been following the 4 step regimen for the past 3 weeks. The first step is the the Purifying […]

As a gastroenterologist, Dr. Roshini Raj, one of the founders of Tula, dedicates her life to educating the public on healthy living and embraces the importance of balance. In fact, the brand’s name is the Sanskrit word for balance. Dr. Raj understands that inner harmony leads to outer beauty, and that feeling great on the outside can improve how we feel on the inside.
These beliefs are the foundation for the Tula brand whose product line is intended to promote a feeling of beauty and radiance. The concept that we need to take care of our insides to look good on the outside; and that feeling beautiful on the outside can improve how we feel on the inside. The products are all formulated with Tula Probiotic Technology, which features rice proteins and vitamins A, C and E, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, along with fruit extracts. The technology also contains a complex that includes yogurt, green tea and blueberry extracts. In addition, each product helps deliver antioxidants to fight free radical attack, while helping promote a youthful appearance.
Recent studies have showed that the topical use of probiotics stimulates skin’s protective mechanism, improves moisture and the balance of the “good” bacteria on the skin’s surface, guards against acne and UV-induced damage and boosts skin’s elasticity and collagen production.

Who needs brick-and-mortar?
A new breed of beauty brands like Jay Manuel Beauty, Glossier, Beautycounter and Tula have scrapped the old adage of “Try before you buy,” and are in favor of taking their products directly to the consumer via TV or the Internet to ignite impulse sales.
These upstart brands are creating beauty’s new reality, one where fashion seems to be ahead of the game with e-commerce players like Warby Parker, BaubleBar, Bonobos and Negative Underwear, among others.
“[Consumers are] buying [online] with the incentive that you’re first to have it,” said Karen Grant, vice president and global beauty industry analyst at The NPD Group Inc. “You’re getting these special deals or you’re getting the sneak peak. There’s a lot of buzz and fun for that impulse purchase, too.”
NPD reported that in 2013 the prestige market was up 5 percent, but the direct-to-consumer category was up 19 percent and it was growing about equally between makeup and skin care. Fragrance on the other hand, isn’t so appealing to purchase online.
Grant added, “The makeup category has been huge. The presence of brands like Sephora and MAC [online] has really helped to create a lot of excitement because it’s so visually easy to see color [on screen].”
While the likes of Sephora and Amazon may dominate beauty e-commerce, these new direct-to-consumer brands believe they have a competitive advantage with their authentic voice. Plus, smaller brands find it’s hard to differentiate themselves in a department or specialty store with the absence of multimillion-dollar advertisingcampaigns.
“There’s a cost obviously associated with launching digitally,” said Grant. “But in-store you have to have inventory and personnel. In a store you have to ask, How can I get the space to make sure someone sees me there?”

This month, I turned 28 and immediately started referring to myself as an “old lady.” I know, I know – I’m not really old, far from it. BUT, there are things about myself that I’m noticing are changing. Like, I’m becoming more responsible with making financial decisions (This I can’t equate 100% to getting older – it helps whenever your husband works in finance!). And, I’m opting much more for “nights in” instead of “nights out.” Most of all, I’m realizing that taking better care of myself is a MUST.
I’ve realized that I can’t buy the same cheap makeup I did in high school. I’m not stalking Forever 21 to get 10 pairs of cheap leggings at the beginning of fall, but instead going to Bloomingdales and getting 2 really good pairs. And, I most definitely can’t sleep with my makeup on anymore. My skincare routine has changed dramatically, and I’ve made a pact with myself to spend the extra cash on products that really do the job and will keep my skin looking young and in good health.
Why I’m Using TULA
I was recently introduced to the new beauty regimen, TULA – am I’m pretty much in love with the 4 products that comprises this skincare system! I was on the prowl for a skincare routine that truly made my skin feel clean (because some just don’t!), and I wanted to be able to see a difference. Other concerns of mine were how dry my skin becomes as the temperatures drop, and of course taking preventive action against aging while I’m still young.
After using this product for a few weeks, I can honestly say that my skin looks and feels great! I am even […]
